⑴ 중요성 

① 탑스쿨일수록 어학 성적, 학점의 중요도는 낮아지고 추천서와 함께 SOP가 합격의 당락에 크게 기여함

○ 다만, 유럽 대학은 미국 대학보다 학점을 더 많이 봄 

② GRE를 안 보는 추세가 증가함에 따라 SOP 및 연구 실적의 중요성이 증가함 

③ SOP의 성격 : 단순한 자기소개서라기보다 작문능력과 연구 능력을 평가하는 정성평가서에 가까움 

○ 현재까지의 연구를 드러내면 지원자의 성향, 장점 등을 더 자세히 드러낼 수 있음

○ 다만, 학위 과정 중에 연구할 big question을 잘 정의해야 하기에 앞으로의 연구 계획 또한 중요함

○ 미국은 학교 중심이 아니라 학과 중심이므로 학과와의 fit을 SOP를 통해 확인하고자 함

○ fit과 관련하여 다른 좋은 학교에 갈만한 학생들을 선발하지 않으려는 경향도 있음

○ fit과 관련하여 연구 스타일, 연구 방법론 같은 게 있을 수 있음

○ 결론 : SOP는 첫째도 fit, 둘째도 fit, 셋째도 fit 

④ SOP의 또다른 성격 : 발명계획서 내지 사업계획서

○ 다만, 연구 관심 분야가 focused 된 경우에 한정

⑤ SOP와 PHS의 차이점 

○ PHS는 disadvantage, 특별한 배경을 적는 거라 오히려 SOP가 자기소개서의 역할을 하게 됨

○ SOP는 public하게 드러낼 수 있는 글인 반면에 PHS는 너무 사적이고 나만 알고 있는 그런 내용을 다룸 

⑥ SOP는 정말 많은 첨삭을 요구한다. 인간 관계, 전략 설정 등을 종합적으로 평가하는 좋은 척도가 아닐까?

⑦ 그러나, 앞으로 ChatGPT를 쓰지 않고 SOP를 쓰는 사람이 있을까? SOP는 언제나 중요할 것인가?

ㅇ 확실히 문장 구조나 단어 선택 등이 상당히 쉬워진 것은 사실

ㅇ ChatGPT로는 모두 커버가 안 되고 글의 논리와 구조를 상당히 많이 신경써야 함

○ 자신의 개성, 경험, 철학을 잘 드러내는 것은 ChatGPT가 써줄 수 없기에 이와 같은 요소가 중요해지지 아닐까?

① MIT : 제한 없음; online application system에 직접 입력 

② 스탠포드 : 2 페이지 이내; single-spaced; 폰트 사이즈 12; 영어가 호환되는 폰트

③ 하버드 : 1000자 이내

④ 칼텍 : 분량 제한 없음

⑤ 예일 : 500-1000자

⑥ 코넬 : 1500자 이내

⑦ 존스 홉킨스 : 2 페이지 이내

⑧ 버클리 : 2-3 페이지

① SOP는 내가 하고 싶은 얘기가 아니라 그들이 듣고 싶은 얘기를 쓰는 것

② academic writing을 한다는 것을 강조 

③ 최대한 간단하고 직관적으로 써야 함

④ 서류로 드러나지 않는 자신만의 이야기를 솔직하게 써야 함 

⑤ "교수님이 시켜서 했다"가 아니라 "내가 이걸 했다"와 같이 능동적으로 써야 함

○ 'I'가 주어로 나오는 게 좋음 

⑥ 기존의 학자들을 무시하는 식으로 쓰지 말 것

⑦ just는 SOP에서 많이 사용하지 않음

⑧ only라는 표현은 너무 강한 어조가 될 수 있으므로 지양할 것

⑨ however는 보통 문장 앞에 오고, but은 문장 중간에 옴

⑩ academic writing에서 and가 문장 앞에 오는 것은 부자연스러우므로 also 같은 표현으로 대체할 것

⑪ SOP에는 축약형을 쓰지 않음

① 일반적으로 7~8월부터 시작하고 (빠를수록 좋음), 9~10월에 가장 수정이 많음

③ 주변 사람들에게도 최대한 물어봐야 함 : 어쩌면 SOP는 그러한 인맥 관계를 평가하는 것일 수도 있음

○ AI가 쓴 글은 약간 티가 남 : 너무 술술 잘 읽히거나, 소설에서나 쓰는 표현을 쓰거나, 특정 단어를 선호함

○ 이 때문에 paraphrasing 하는 툴을 적극적으로 사용할 필요가 있음

○ 단순한 질문보다는 big question을 써야 함 : 이미 연구가 됐거나 너무 단순한 질문은 지원자의 역량을 어필하기 어려운 반면, 너무 급진적인 주제는 공감을 자아내기 어려워 오히려 기회가 적어지는 느낌이 있음. 즉, trade-off가 있으므로 주의할 것

○ 학과와 관련된 연구, 관련된 펀딩이 SOP에 잘 드러나도록

○ 미래지향적으로 쓰는 게 중요함 

② 4-2. 왜 이 학교를 지원했는지 

○ 학과명 및 학과 홈페이지 키워드

○ 커리큘럼도 한 번 찾아볼 필요는 있음

○ 단, 학교별로 다르게 SOP를 쓰는 것도 좋지만 비슷하게 써서 일원화시키는 것도 장점이 있음 : 필자의 전략

○ 교수의 트위터를 보면 최근 학술 경향을 알 수 있음 : 참고로 미국은 트위터를 많이 씀

○ 이 부분은 학교에 대한 관심을 드러내기 때문에 필수적

① 5-1. academy? industry?

○ academy로 갈지 industry로 갈지 굳이 명시하지 않아도 됨

○ industry를 어필하면 마이너스를 주시는 교수님도 있을 수 있어서 굳이 쓰지 않는 게 현명

○ SOP는 구속력이 없어서 추후 진로 방향을 바꾸는 게 문제되지 않음

② 5-2. 사회적 공헌

① 장학금 수혜 여부 

○ 공학, 사회과학은 학과의 펀딩이 보장돼 있지 않으므로 장학금 수혜 여부가 합격률 증가에 기여함 

○ 자연과학은 학과의 펀딩이 대체로 잘 이뤄져 있고, 로테이션이 많아 펀딩 여부가 상이하기 때문에 장학금 수혜 여부가 합격률에 그대로 이어지지 않지만 자신의 능력을 인정받았다는 증거로 활용할 수 있음

○ 주립대의 경우 외국인에 대한 펀딩이 굉장히 제한적이므로 장학금 수혜 여부가 굉장히 중요해짐
