① bioinformatics (BI) : data science와 유사한 성격. 특히 생물학의 배경지식이 많이 필요함. 비교적 문과 같은 느낌

② computational biology : computer science와 유사한 성격. method, DL, AI 등. 비교적 이과 같은 느낌

③ 앞으로의 생물정보학(BI)의 추세에 대한 다양한 예측

○ 의견 1. Harvard BIG 프로그램에 AI 과정이 생긴 점이나 LLM이 BI를 상당 부분 대체할 수 있을 거라는 전망에 비추어, BI가 점점 computational biology가 되려는 경향이 보이고 10년 뒤쯤에는 bioinformatics라는 단어조차 없을 것 같다고 예상됨 (생물정보학 하강 요인)

○ 의견 2. 생화학, 발생생물학, 재생의학, 물리학 등에서도 생물정보학을 언급하는 것으로 보아 생물정보학의 범위 자체가 넓어질 수 있음 : protein universe처럼 방대한 오믹스 분야를 구축하지 못하는 학문 분야는 쇠퇴할 것이기 때문 (생물정보학 상승 요인)

○ 의견 3. 요즘 들어 부쩍 보이는 경향성. AI는 돈이 벌리지 않지만, BI는 돈이 벌림. 특히 미국과 AI 기술 격차가 400년인 한국은 더욱. (생물정보학 상승 요인)

○ 의견 4. 어차피 모든 분야가 AI와의 결합을 시도하고 있으며, 양자, 바이오, 우주와 같은 고맥락 분야에서의 AI의 도입은 그 자체로 고유성과 산업성이 있을 것이라는 관측 (생물정보학 상승 요인)

⑽ biostatistics 

① Public Health School에 있는 경우가 많음

② 통계학과 출신만 합격할 정도로 통계학 기반이 강함

⑾ biomedical informatics (BMI)

① 일반적인 bioinformatics는 CS, computational biology와 유사하지만 BMI는 health records에 집중하는 느낌

 

 

2. 대학원 생활

⑴ 합격 오퍼

① 단계 1. 비공식 합격 오퍼 : PhD program에서 graduate office로 지원자를 추천

② 단계 2. 공식 합격 오퍼 : 비공식 합격 오퍼 이후, graduate office에서 서류가 정확한지 확인하고 합격을 최종 컨펌

⑵ 기숙사

① 대부분의 대학원은 기숙사를 2년 정도 지원

② WashU 같은 경우 기숙사가 지원되지 않음

③ 스탠포드, Weill cornell, Sloan 같은 경우 기숙사는 전기간 지원됨  

⑶ 비자(visa)

① 일반적으로 학생 비자는 F-1 혹은 J-1

② 풀브라이트 장학금의 경우 J-1 비자, 다른 정부 장학생의 경우 G-1 비자를 발급받기도 함

③ 미국 job market에서 job을 얻고자 하는 경우 H-1 비자가 있어야 함

④ 미국 회사가 비자가 없는 자에게 비자를 발급할 수 있으나 여러 가지 이유로 꺼려하는 편

⑤ F-1 비자가 J-1 비자보다 유효기간이 길어 job market에 들어가기 유리함

⑥ 미국 영주권을 취득하려면 변호사 선임 비용 등 한화 2천만 원과 1년 이상의 미국 연속 거주 기간이 필요함 

⑷ 로테이션(rotation)

① 로테이션은 학과에서 돈을 부담 

② UCSD BISB 같이 과 펀딩이 주로 NIH grant인 경우 domestic만 지원하므로 international은 로테이션을 할 수 없음 

⑸ 급여

① 펀딩이 충분한 랩은 대부분 tution fee 풀펀딩 + stipend

② stipend는 최대 40,000 USD/년 수준 : 간혹 48,000 USD/년까지 받는 경우에도 생활비까지 고려하면 비슷한 수준 (e.g., 뉴욕시)

③ 산업계 인턴 

○ 박사 1년차에는 보통 잘 안 함

○ 인턴은 보통 5월 ~ 8월에 일함 : 모집은 1년 내내 있는 편 

○ 박사 졸업 후 취업에도 유리하게 작용 (같은 곳이 아니어도)

① 스탠포드에서는 학과가 다른 교수님도 지도교수로 할 수 있음 

 

 

② 스탠포드 SOP에는 '창업하고 싶다'는 얘기도 언급할 수 있음

③ 인터뷰와 합격 오퍼가 가장 늦게 오는 학교 중 하나

⑵ ✅💻👆☠️ Bioengineering : GRE General Not considered. GRE Subject Not Considered. Deadline: December 1, 2023. Contact: bioe_admissions@stanford.edu (ref) 현재, 이미징, 영상 기기를 언급하면 잘 안 뽑는 경향이 있다고 함 (∵ 다른 과로 많이 전향하기 때문). Fee Waiver 신청 (~ 23.11.17; first come, first served basis)

⑶ Biomedical Physics : 핵의학 관련. 다른 Stanford PhD 프로그램과 중복 지원 불가. 평균 학위 기간 5 ~ 6년. 2022년에 신설. 1년에 6명 정도 뽑기에 상당히 competitive.

It is true that BMP is quite competitive on account of being quite small. 

 

⑷ Biophysics : 크게 이론생물학, 의료기기 (e.g., MRI), 고해상도 현미경, 머신러닝으로 구분. 1년에 6명 뽑는 수준. international은 거의 안 뽑음

⑸ Structural Biology : ligand-receptor interaction 등을 연구. cryo-EM, NMR, X-ray crystallography 등을 이용

⑹ Bioscience : 외국인 펀딩이 적기 때문에 (예 : NIH 펀딩은 외국인에게 쓸 수 없음) 외국인 TO 및 합격률이 많이 낮음 

⑺ Bioscience - Genetics : 거의 미국 출신만 뽑음 

⑻ Bioscience - Biomedical Data Science (舊 Biomedical Informatics) : international을 거의 뽑지 않음 

We have been continuously funded by a training grant from the National Library of Medicine since 1984, which provides fellowship support for students who are US citizens and permanent residents. International students bring outside funding or compete for Stanford Graduate Fellowships. (ref)

⑴ 개요

① Biomedical Informatics 프로그램(TOEFL 100점 요구)을 제외하고는 대체로 TOEFL 80점을 요구함

② GSAS는 최대 3개까지 지원 가능함

⑷ Harvard Medical School Department of Systems Biology

⑸ Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology Medical Engineering and Medical Physics 

① IELTS 7 이상 혹은 TOEFL iBT 100점 이상 (ref)

⑹ ✅💻👆☠️ Biophysics : GRE General Not Accepted. GRE Subject Not Accepted. (ref) 이미지 기반 멀티오믹스 분야로 최정상에 있음. 1년에 12명 뽑는 수준. Virtual Interview : February 6-9, 2024 (ref). application portal에서 application fee waiver를 신청할 수 있음

⑴ Public Health : MPH, MS, PhD 학위를 주는데, PhD를 지원하려면 GSAS에서 해야 함

① UPenn은 CV에 GPA 등을 적지 않아야 함

8. ✅💻👆✈️🏫 University of Michigan in Ann Arbor 

⑴ 개요

① PIBS ('핍스'라고 읽는다) 내에 있는 2개 이상의 프로그램을 지원할 수 있음 

 

 

② international은 정말 합격하기 어려움 (ref)

Admission to PIBS is extremely competitive. PIBS accepts only 5% or less of the international applications received each year. In addition, not all programs accept international students.

The following programs utilize federal training grants to fund students; students appointed to these grants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Therefore, these programs do not accept international applicants through PIBS:

* Cancer Biology
* Cellular & Molecular Biology
* Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology

Due to funding limitations and budgetary restraints for international travel, Microbiology & Immunology will only accept applications from international students if they are currently undergraduate or graduate students in the U.S. with an F1 visa.

② CS 계열 : 한국에서 바로 입학하는 CS 입학생은 1년에 0 ~ 2명 정도

① 1년에 60명 정도 선발 : 이번에 지원자 수는 3000명

② Microsoft, Amazon 등 테크 회사가 많고, 그 중 가장 센 학과라서 CS 백그라운드가 없으면 많이 어려울 수 있음
