○ 첫째, 미국 대학 출신 학생은 대체로 학부를 졸업하고 바로 대학원으로 진학
○ 둘째, 어릴수록 더 성장 잠재력이 크다고 인식
○ 셋째, 어릴수록 새로운 문화를 받아들이는 게 빠름 : 약간 amenable 하달까..
⑵ 석사 vs 박사
① 석사 : 2년. 대부분 수업만 듣는 학위 과정이고 thesis를 쓰는 경우는 조금 뽑고 박사 수준으로 치열함
○ 석사 2년 동안 총 등록금은 적으면 8천만 원, 많으면 1억 이상이 소요됨
○ 다만, 석사 등록금이 면제되는 경우도 많으며 RA를 하면서 (등록금 없이) 연 2400만 원을 더 받는 경우도 있음
② 박사 : 5 ~ 6년. 대부분 연구 경험이 있는 학생들이 지원함
③ 미국 대학 출신자 : 대부분 석사 없이 바로 박사 진학. 적어도 2학년부터 학부 연구생을 하면서 대체로 4년만에 학부 졸업
④ 석사가 박사보다 결과가 늦게 나옴
⑶ 종합대학 vs 연구소
① 연구소라고 종합대학 대학원과 그렇게 다른 느낌은 아님
② 종합대학은 대학 네임벨류가 필요한 경우에 좋고, 연구소는 연구에 집중하고 싶은 경우에 좋음
③ 연구소에는 학부가 없어 TA가 의무가 아니고, 종신 과학자들이 많아 노벨상 수상자 비율이 상당히 높음
④ 연구소는 과학자들의 최종 목적지 중 하나이기 때문에 대학교 과정을 건너 뛴 느낌을 줄 수 있음
⑤ 연구소는 대체로 등록금이 거의 없음
⑷ 동부 vs 서부
① 탑스쿨은 대체로 민주당 성향이 강한 동부와 서부에 있음
② 동부는 application page에 쓸 게 많고 서부는 별로 없는 느낌
③ 동부는 인터뷰 때 좀 더 격식을 차리고 서부는 자유로운 느낌
④ 기후는 확실히 서부가 나음
⑸ 미국 vs 유럽
① 미국은 박사가 따로 없고 (예외 : DEng) 석박 통합으로 박사 과정을 제공함 : 석사는 박사 합격률을 높이기 위한 용도에 불과
② 유럽은 석사가 있어야 박사에 지원할 수 있고, TO가 수시로 나며, 정성평가(cf. SOP)보다 정량평가를 많이 함
⑹ spring vs fall
① 많은 미국 대학이 fall admission phd 프로그램만을 제공함
② spring에 열리더라도 동일 대학의 fall admission이 더 opening이 많음
⑺ 작년에 이어 올해도 GRE를 안 보는 추세가 뚜렷함
① 형식적인 이유 : 코로나 블루 (코로나 전파에 따른 학업 집중 감소)
② 숨은 이유 1. 코로나 변이가 지속적으로 출현함에 따라 시험을 강요하기 어려운 분위기 고려

⑴ 개요 : 전 세계에서 가장 큰 비영리 민간 생의학 연구소. 분야가 화학 중심으로 지극히 한정적. 바이오 분야에서도 다 알아줌. 노벨상 수상자도 많음. 미국 기준 생명과학 9위, 유기화학 6위, 생화학 6위. 주로 의료 연구에 집중. 단백질의 구조를 밝히기 위해 NMR, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM을 많이 사용. HIV, SARS-Cov-2 연구를 많이 하였고 실제 모더나 COVID-19 백신 개발에 일조함. 유튜브 채널. 합격률 17%.
⑵ 연혁 : 인슐린 발견에서 시작하여 Ellen Browning Scripps에 의해 1924년 설립. 대학원 프로그램은 1989년부터 시작. 플로리다 캠퍼스는 2004년에 설립. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography와는 확실히 다르고, 플로리다 캠퍼스도 UCF로 편입되고 있음
